CHRISTMAS AWAY FROM HOME

Christmas is one of the most anticipated occasions yearly for Christians. It's the only time most families gather or reunite after a long time of separation. But for the past year, it's the other way around for me. It was my first time to celebrate Christmas away from home, away from my loved ones. It wasn't easy, it's heart-breaking but thanks to my friends and workmates who are with me here, they made my Christmas worth celebrating. They've been my second family and I'm still grateful to have known them and be part of my 2017 journey.

Working in the Middle East where Christmas is not being celebrated is quite hard, you can't celebrate it on time because you have work on Christmas day, lucky for you if it was your day off. Despite that, we still make it a point to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. "Simbang Gabi" is widely practiced in the Religious Complex of Qatar, unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend because of my work and the distance on my place. This is one of the reasons that saddens me. I used to complete the 9 days of Simbang Gabi way back in the Philippines, but for the recently concluded year I haven't completed it and worst is that I haven't attended even a single mass. This doesn't mean that we no longer give importance to Christmas, we just show our Love to God by other means - praying by ourselves and cooking some foods to celebrate it.

Christmas day came and all I can do is to video chat my family in the Philippines. Good thing we have all these advanced technologies now that makes us feel a bit closer to our loved ones. Your longing for them vanishes even for a short time. It makes you feel you're with them celebrating this wondrous occasion.

OFW's have to endure all these things for the sake of our family and for a better future. I truly admire all OFW's for this. You, or should I say We are really Hero, not only in the eyes of our families but for all the Filipinos.

Despite all these trials and struggles, we are still fighting. What matters most is that everyone is happy. Hoping that we will be able to celebrate it with them for the next Christmas to come.

Let's not forget the true essence of Christmas - Giving, Loving, forgiving and Uniting.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
